Seasonal Climate Watch - November 2023 to March 2024

The rainfall forecasts indicate above-normal rainfall over the north-eastern parts of the country during the summer season. These above-normal rainfall forecasts would likely have a positive impact on crop and livestock production. However, below-normal rainfall is predicted over most parts of the central and south-western areas of the country during early and late-summer seasons. Therefore, the relevant decision-makers are encouraged to advise farmers in these regions to practice soil and water conservation, proper water harvesting and storage, establishing good drainage systems, and other appropriate farming practices.

Agri SA calls for assistance as veld fires threaten food security

Agri SA chief executive officer, Christo van der Rheede said that veld fires can cause extensive damage that destroys vegetation, harms animals, and threatens communities and food security. In response to the destruction of vegetation, emergency response efforts are needed to assist farmers with feed. However, he said the impact of veld fires can be felt long after the fire has been extinguished. Van der Rheede said that the damage to soil health, the disruption of ecosystems, and the alteration of natural fire patterns can also have long-lasting consequences.

LUR besoek brandgeteisterde plase in Noordwes

Seasonal Climate Watch - January to May 2023

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in a La Niña state, and forecasts indicate that it will likely remain in this state during the remainder of the 2022/23 summer season and return to a neutral state during Autumn. The presence of a La Niña event usually has its strongest impact on rainfall during the mid-summer months. With the continued persistence of the La Niña event, there is a high chance that it will have its usual effect on South Africa, which is generally for above-normal rainfall and below-normal temperatures over the summer rainfall areas.

Statement from Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction - 2022 December 30

Depending on the particular region, the prioritization of the guidelines will differ. The basic strategy to follow would be to minimize and diversify risk, optimize soil water availability and to manage the renewable resources (rain water and grazing) to uphold sound farming objectives. Long-term mitigation strategies should be considered by implementing techniques to enhance in-field water harvesting by reducing run-off and improving infiltration. Reduced tillage methods are very important in this regard, as is basin tillage, to capture rainwater in the drier areas.

Classification of severe weather events as a national disaster

Agri SA welcomes the National Disaster Management Centre’s (NDMC) classification of a national disaster due to the severe rainfall and flooding in large parts of the country.

The recent rains have also been welcomed due to prolonged drought conditions producers experienced the past 6 to 9 years, however, these conditions have brought severe risks for crops and damage to infrastructure. Road infrastructure is of particular importance to be prioritised.
